Traffic clearance for emergency vehicles

Introduction

An ambulance is a medically equipped vehicle, and it provides emergency care to sick or injured people to get them to the hospital. But, sometimes, the ambulance also fails in serving its purpose. The cause is traffic congestion between the patient and hospital, which causes unexpected delays sometimes. Sometimes the condition gets worse, which often leads to death. This situation mostly happens in metro cities.

According to the NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) data, nearly 24,012 people die due to delay in getting medical assistance every day. These patients suffered heart attacks, brain Hambridge, suicide attempts, accidents, and strokes. According to the National Crime, birth and death records in January 2014; Heart attack, 19% of the total, are the leading cause of death. Accidents are 10th on the list; nearly 4,40,042 cases are reported across the country each year, of which 1,39,091 people lose their life. The first hour after the incident (Golden Hour) is critical. Many victims wait for help at the site, and single minute delay sometimes costs them their life. “The reason for delaying is that, When drivers hear an emergency siren or somebody inform them about it on the road, after that, they start making a path for an emergency vehicle.”

Exploration

To know, in detail, I have conducted an in-depth interview. We discussed how traffic occurs? When it occurs? And how to prevent it? During the interview.

Some of the highlighted questions what we covered in the interview:

  1. Are you ready to give a free way to emergency vehicles?
  2. How to make an open path for emergency vehicles?
  3. What are the causes that lead to traffic?
  4. How to reduce traffic?
  5. What are the significant factors for trafficking?
  6. How often are you using a phone when you stuck in traffic?
  7. During traveling, your internet data would be active?
  8. If you will gate a chance to make way for an emergency vehicle, how would you make a clear path?
  9. Why ambulance have to wait for traffic clearance?
  10. What could be the alternative of an ambulance?

According to the interviewee, people are ready to give a path for an emergency vehicle, but there should be a space to move, which is quite tricky to get a space. Or we must have some time to settle down the exiting traffic.

During the interview, we discovered the other factors that are mention below Image:

1. Vehicle

  • Heavy vehicles are also running on the regular road or a service road.
  • A single person is traveling in personal care.

2. Road infrastructure in the city

  • Roads are not sufficient to compare running vehicles.
  • Poor road condition
  • Exception of overbridge
  • Narrow road

3. Traffic signal

  • Signals are not working according to the vehicles flow
  • Every signal must have a camera

4. Parking/Stop

  • The outer corner of the roads are covered with the parking
  • Some bus stops are close to the signal, which is also halting traffic.
  • Parking on the narrow road

5. Traffic rules

  • Traffic rule should be strict about vehicle speed
  • The wrong side overtake.
  • Without signal overtaking
  • Proper lane rules
  • Zig zag driving

6. Other causes

  • Marches on the road
  • Marriage bogie on the road
  • Road maintenance
  • Indirectly or directly, another maintenance is halting traffic on the road (e.g., Metro lane work).

Conceptual solution

A. Traffic signal system: Through the current traffic signal system, we can preclear the traffic for an emergency vehicle.

B. Push notification: Through the Google map data, we can solve it if the emergency will accrue. All wanderers will get a push notification on their device.

C. Emergency light on the road (like reflectors): The light on the road will blink with a red color during the emergency.

D. Drone: Before passing the emergency vehicle through the specific road, the drone will clear the traffic.

E. Metro: Escape from a city traffic metro is the best choice, and as an emergency service, Metro can have a medical boogie.

A. Traffic signal system:

  • If the red light starts to blink, that means the emergency vehicle will be pass in the nearest future (8 to 10 minutes).
  • When an ambulance passes from a specific route, another route should be blocked, or 80% of vehicle flow should reduce.

B. Push notification:

  • An emergency vehicle will pass from a particular path; before that, the wanderer will get a notification with an emergency siren on their smartphone.

C. Emergency light on the road (like reflectors):

  • If an emergency vehicle passes through on a specific lane, before that, the reflector will blink and make a traffic-free lane.

D. Drone:

  • The drone will clear the traffic for an emergency vehicle, the same as a person does, the front of an emergency vehicle.
